What Makes You Happy?

A medium that all people can access regardless of ability, art provides an alternative to conventional communication. This work aims to explore how people with disabilities communicate through arts.

‘What makes you happy?’ was a collaborative project undertaken during lock-down. Kits were posted to individuals homes for them to design jumpers by answering ‘what makes you happy?’ They illustrated their thoughts through drawings and colour palettes. Selected due to their symbolic status of warmth, comfort and familiarity, I chose knitted jumpers to exhibit the responses I anticipated. Their versatility made them the perfect garment for this project. The result was a series of designs based upon the same question, with people of different ‘abilities’ all responding with their own distinct narrative. My hope is that this work will improve the esteem of disabled adults – by highlighting how, at least in terms of what makes them happy, they’re similar to everyone else.
